Renewable Energies and Household Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Development in Rural Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

Target area

Khewa and Kama districts, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan and Baljuvon and Temurmalik districts, Khatlon province, Tajikistan

Goal

Reduce poverty and vulnerability by diminishing the consumption of natural resources and by stimulating local economic growth through the promotion and further development of appropriate and sustainable technologies.

Specific objectives

·   By utilizing renewable energies, vulnerable rural communities and entrepreneurs in targeted regions of Afghanistan and Tajikistan enjoy year-round access to electricity, leading to improved productivity, health, access to information and relief of household budgets.

·   Energy efficiency of resource poor households is significantly increased, leading to substantially lower expenses for fuel procurement, improved respiratory health and reversal of the current process of deforestation and land degradation.

·   Local traders and craftsmen successfully tap into emerging business opportunities in the RE / EE sector. At the end of the project, production and dissemination channels are locally anchored.

Results

·   3 micro-hydropower plants (with a capacity of 10-25KW) out of preliminary expected 2 for communal use were completed and operational in Baljuvon (2) and Temurmalik (1). As a result 213 people, 1 school, 2 mosques, 3 craftsmen in Darai Nolak village and 187 people, 1 schools, 1 mosque, 2 craftsmen of Baljuvon district and 1 large secondary school (>288   pupils), 1 mosque, 1 rural hospital, 4 businesses, 1 teahouse/ restaurant. In Shibanai village of Temurmalik district benefiting from the installed systems.

·   8 pico-hydropower systems (with a capacity of 1-8kw) were completed and operational. In total 92 HH, 6 workshops, 2 schools and 1 medical point in Afardi, Shaidon, Qozion, Peshtova, Darai mazor, Mullokoni, Shipdara and Qulhkiya villages of Sari Khosor Jamoat in Baljuvon district benefiting from the installed system.

·   170 home solar systems (100W and 150W, with 20% beneficiary contribution) have been distributed and put into operation.

·   35 powerful systems with a capacity of 1-2 kW have been installed and put into operation (18 for enterprises, 10 for social institutions and 7 for solar pumping systems) in Baljuvon and Temurmalik districts.

·   5 Solar water heaters installed in social institutions such as medical point, central district hospital, community hospital, mosque and 1 as a demonstration point in Bargi sabz office. As a result about 30000 rural inhabitants benefiting from the installed solar water heaters.

·   4 formally registered management groups plus 6 informal infrastructure management groups. In total 18 technicians from 10 villages have been selected and trained.

·   Under the component of the Specific objective #2 18 field promoters and 96 masters on EE have been trained (in Baljuvon and Temurmalik district (94) and Kabul, Afghanistan(2)), 106 demonstration models were installed, 1716 EE units sold and 294 extremely vulnerable families received free EE technologies.

·   A two-day energy event (energy fair) was facilitated by the project in Baljuvon District.

·   Under the component of the Specific result #3 technical training was provided to 25 specialists of various professions in the production of EE technologies (5 people more than originally planned). 13 of them received equipment as part of the project to improve the professionalism and quality of their work.

·   15000 TJS were handed out as a credit to 7 project participants (craftsmen, masters and traders) and subsequently returned 100%.

·   490 posters and information brochures were designed, printed out and disseminated among rural population.
