Project title 19

Safe drinking water supply in the Ishkashim border area.

Target area

Ishkashim District, GBAO (Tajikistan)

Goal

Promote economic and social integration and development within the region by encouraging legal cross-border and close-border cooperation and exchange.

Specific                 objectives

·   10 selected rural communities in the Tajik Ishkashim border area feature a piped water supply providing safe drinking water to public tap-stands, thereby improving public health and limiting the occurrence of infectious diseases among thousands of residents as well as potential conflicts surrounding the limited water resources.

Results

·   In 10 villages on the Tajik side of the border, a safe source of water is protected and sustainably exploited to provide potable water. 10 piped schemes (powered by gravity or solar pumping) are operational. Water is supplied to public tap- stands, each shared by 10 households.

·   Water User Group (WUG) to manage and maintain constructed drinking water supply systems has been established and operational in 11 target communities.

·   10 communities on the Tajik side of the border have integrated basic hygiene practice (including specific measures against Covid-19) in their daily life.

·   In 9 communities on the Tajik side more than 900 people from various social groups had participated in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) training, supplemented by specific hygiene measures related to COVID-19.

·   An assessment of waterborne infectious diseases, conducted in close collaboration with relevant local government agencies and through ongoing project monitoring, showed that the project's timely intervention improved hygiene conditions and reduced waterborne diseases in 54% of households.
