Energizing Development in the Ishkashim border area

Project title 18

Energizing Development in the Ishkashim border area

Target area

Ishkashim district, Tajikistan

Goal

To promote economic and social integration and development in the region by encouraging legitimate cross-border and trans-border cooperation and exchange.

Specific objectives

·  Six rural communities without electricity grid connections on the Tajik side of the Ishkashim border district now have reliable renewable energy supplies for household and industrial use. This provides significant income growth and thus stabilization in the volatile region.

Results

·  Six solar pumping systems have been installed to provide irrigation to rainfed agricultural land, benefiting more than 1,500 smallholder farmers in Tajikistan;

·  Structures for operation, maintenance, and cost recovery have been developed. Six energy consumer groups have been created, each with a charter, a democratically elected council, the tools and know-how to operate their energy system, and an agreed-upon tariff system;

·  Two technicians were trained in the maintenance of cross-flow turbines, ELC equipment and solar pumps and became members of repair and restoration structures.

·  By the end of the project, the total additional income generated by rural businesses and farmers as a result of the project exceeded USD80,000.

Duration

January 2021 – December 2024
